What's wrong with working hard?

Doing great work and delivering results may not be not enough to attract reward and recognition, and working harder might even hold you back… here’s why.

Get your nose off the grindstone, step out from behind your desk, and go do more of the activities that make your value visible. Here are three things to do more of:

• Look for opportunities to work for influential people who have a track record of recognizing and developing talent.

• Choose projects and roles that showcase your strengths, and try not to get stuck in roles that don’t.

• Find some ways to promote your accomplishments that are inside your comfort zone, like presenting updates in meetings, sharing best practices, or sending out regular status reports. If it helps, think of this as promoting the accomplishment, not promoting yourself.
